Avoiding Bait-and-Switch Carpet Cleaners

Unfortunately, our industry has some companies that use “bait-and-switch” tactics. They advertise a super-low price to get in the door but once they arrive, the price suddenly skyrockets with hidden fees, “required” add-ons, or pressure sales.

Here’s how to protect yourself:

1. Be cautious of unrealistically low prices: If a company advertises $10–$20 a room, that’s a red flag. Professional cleaning requires proper equipment, insurance, training, and time. Quality companies simply can’t operate at those prices.

2. Ask for a clear, written price upfront: A reputable cleaner will tell you:

  • The minimum charge

  • What is included (pre-treatment, spot cleaning, basic deodorizer, etc.)

  • What costs extra (pet treatments, restorative cleaning, moving furniture)

3. Confirm what “per room” really means: Some bait-and-switch companies charge extra for:

  • Anything over 100 sq. ft.

  • Hallways

  • Stairs

  • Using the truck mount

  • A good company is transparent and consistent.

4. Ask if they are IICRC-certified or trained: Proper training means fewer “surprises” and better results.

5. Read real reviews: Look for repeated complaints about:

  • Showing up and raising the price

  • Saying areas “require” special treatments

  • Pressure sales

6. Choose a cleaner who focuses on long-term relationships—not quick sales: An honest company explains the process, answers questions, and never pressures you.
