Fine grains of sand, bits of grass, and everyday dirt have a way of finding their way inside, no matter how many times the welcome mat gets shaken out. Add in a few barbecue spills—ketchup, soda, wine, or grease—and the extra wear from kids and guests coming and going, and floors can start looking a little worn before fall even arrives.

That’s why the end of summer is the perfect time to refresh carpets, hardwood, and tile—removing the buildup and bringing back that just-cleaned feel before the holidays start creeping closer.

  • Blot spills right away. Avoid scrubbing—blot gently with a clean white towel to keep stains from spreading.

  • Use the right cleaning products. Harsh chemicals can harm carpet fibers and dull hardwood or stone finishes. If unsure, check with a professional before applying anything.
